This blog began as a journal of a Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Travel Award visit to the USA to study how Lifestyle Redesign could be used in Occupational Therapy to improve the hospital/home interface for older people. It has continued to record developments and inspiration gained from that experience since returning from Los Angeles early in 2012.

G is for goals....

Goal setting is one of the methods used in the Lifestyle Redesign® programmes and interventions that I observed during my study visit to find out about this approach being used by occupational therapists.
The programmes achieved their success by enabling participants to understand how their daily activities and routines affect health and to explore new ways of doing things, or new activities.
This process involves taking some risks by venturing outside your ‘comfort zone’. Goal setting can help people through this process by setting goals that make small steps towards a bigger aim. Support is needed, either to celebrate success, or empathise with failure and encourage someone to try again- maybe in a different way.

Setting goals to help you change to a more positive way of living is like making promises to yourself- and then keeping them!
